The murram road connecting Kachwekano and Heisesero (Muko) is the most scenic of all Lake Bunyonyi roads. Moreover, this 20 km route can save a driver 30 minutes compared to the tarmac option through Kabale Town. It is especially popular among those who want to track mountain gorillas as a day trip, starting from Bunyonyi at 5:30 in the morning to reach Rushaga or Ruhija in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. In terms of visits to the Batwa “Pygmies” of Echuya Forest, this road is part of the attraction.
However, it all completely depends on its current condition. Following this year’s longest rainy season in memory, the local government has been repairing it for … months. Two days ago, the Gorilla Highlands team decided to test it for the sake of all drivers.
It was a crazy experience. The video above will only show you some sections but together they make quite a complete picture. Remarkably, vast stretches in the middle haven’t yet been touched?!
As an adventure, we highly recommend it (as long as you are not trying it after heavy rain). As a road suitable for tourists, definitely not. And based on the progress so far, it might take several more months before the road becomes a viable option again. We will keep you updated.
