Introducing: Gorilla Highlands Ambassador Training (May-July 2026)

📁 ,

WHO IS BEHIND THIS?

Gorilla Highlands Experts (GHE), a Musanze-based organisation promoting the transboundary Gorilla Highlands region shared by Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo.

For more about us see: gorillahighlands.com

WHAT IS IT?

A combination of tour guide and media training, equipping you with skills needed for two freelance money-making opportunities:

  • tour guiding (GHE will hire the best of the trainees for our trips)
  • media production (GHE will pay you for articles/videos published in our media)

You will of course be able to apply your newly acquired knowledge working for other clients/employers too — our main goal is to create great ambassadors of our region.

HOW MUCH DOES THE TRAINING COST?

USD 50.

WHAT DO I GET FOR THIS MONEY?

Three days of accommodation and food at Edirisa on Lake Bunyonyi, two months of digital training and a certificate.

HOW DO I APPLY?

Please fill this application form in before 12:00 Rwandan time (13:00 Ugandan time) on Friday 22 May 2026.

By Sunday 24 May you will be informed if you have been accepted and then pay the equivalent of USD 50 over Mobile Money.

HOW WILL THE TRAINING PROCESS GO?

  • IN-PERSON: You will start with a 3-day in-person session at Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda (arrival: 28 May; departure: 31 May) that will include an exam helping us establish your knowledge.
  • ONLINE: You will then be added to a WhatsApp group for two months of online training and active participation; instruction materials will be shared from Monday to Friday but will not take more than an hour of your daily time.

You will have to participate in two Zoom calls (Saturday 13 June and Saturday 11 July, 6pm Rwandan/7pm Ugandan time).

Please watch this video to get a better idea of our calls and get more info:

WILL I GET A CERTIFICATE?

Yes, if you earn it. There will be an online exam at the end of the two months, and certificates issued to successful candidates.

WHO ARE THE EXPERTS INVOLVED?

Andy Ault has been a safari guide for more than 30 years. In Zimbabwe he led walking safaris in all of its national parks and canoeing trips on the Zambezi, but then Uganda happened to him … He came to the country in 2004 as a tour leader, and soon found himself quite busy as a guide, operations manager, mentor and tour operator. Just wait for him to open the Pocket Treasure and decide it’s time to see the rest of the region too! When Andy chats with fellow guides deep in the remarkable wild or sits with a keen guest around a campfire, he is the happiest man in the world, sharing his beliefs in responsible guiding rooted in storytelling. Sadly for him, he also sometimes has to be in Kampala, Uganda. [bio updated: 2026-05]

Brooke Squires has worked in zoos, national parks and conservation areas around the world for more than 25 years. Her enduring love for the wildlife and people of Africa began as a child when her family was stationed in South Africa. Later, during her years working at Zoos Victoria in Australia, Brooke joined the Wildlife Science and Conservation team, developing and implementing community conservation programs in Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These experiences eventually led her to creating RAW Africa Eco-Tours, operating across our region and the African continent. When not guiding nature lovers around, Brooke does it all from Williamstown, Australia. [bio updated: 2026-05]

An author, storyteller and social entrepreneur, David holds a sustainable ecotourism award from 2024. Helped by his young family, David runs one of the most remarkable regional homestays called Gahiza Island Retreat, on Lake Mutanda, Uganda. [bio updated: 2026-05]

When not on research trips in Africa or Europe, Ian can be found somewhere in Ireland.[bio updated: 2026-05]

Thanks very much it’s actually going to be a great learning center, but what I can say is that training will be based on gorillas 🦍, what about us who don’t have were to do gorilla tracking which other course can we select.

    1. Oh no, it will not be based on gorillas. “Gorilla Highlands” is simply how we call our transboundary region, that’s all. Have a look at our website in more detail, you will see what we are about.

True Cross-Border Synergy: It is wonderful to see professionals from Uganda, Rwanda, and the DR Congo sharing the same platform. It sends a powerful, positive message about the unity, shared heritage, and collective strength of the Great Lakes region.

  7. I’m so much interested to join this , seems very promising !
